Wild Land Firefighting Class
From August 20-24, firefighters from Ponce Inlet, Edgewater, Port Orange, Volusia County and the Florida Department of Forestry spent 40 hours learning the essentials of wild land fire fighting. Ponce Inlet Fire Rescue hosted the class, using funds from a Florida Fire Chiefs' Association grant.
15 students, under the guidance of Department of Forestry instructors Will Raulerson and Mike Roberts, spent 40 hours learning basic fire behavior, wild land fire suppression, wild land fire attack in residential areas, and firefighter safety. Participants learned strategies and tactics for fighting fires as well as deployment of emergency shelters if overrun during a blaze.
The week culminated in a controlled burn and firefighting practical exercise at the Tiger Bay State Forest. Students assisted Department of Forestry employees as they initiated a three acre controlled fire to rejuvenate a wildlife clearing. Ponce Inlet's Engine 78, Brush Attack 78 and other firefighting equipment from Department of Forestry were used to control the fire. The firefighters practiced clearing fire lines, working in and around Department of Forestry heavy equipment and effective team building. Although the temperature was above 95 degrees, the 15 participants were able to see and use the techniques they had been taught in class.
Volusia County and northern Florida have faced extreme fire danger and numerous serious fires this year. Fire departments from across the county routinely assist other municipalities when faced with serious incidents. Ponce Inlet, Edgewater and other smaller departments are often asked to assist neighboring jurisdictions and can expect to receive assistance in return. Classes like this give needed instruction and help firefighters from state and local fire departments form working relationships which will be needed on the scene of a real fire. The firefighters who attended this class were: Ken Burgman, Dana Carter, Derek George, Skip Tracy, Mike Noone, Steve Bell, Mike Young, Susanne Williams, Albert Gregory, Cheryl Herren, Ashley Pantuso, Sean Tyree, Jake Smith, Shannon Tyler and David Blair.
