Timucuan Oaks Botanical Garden
4500 block of South Peninsula Drive
Timucuan Oaks Botanical Gardens is an 8-acre site acquired in 2004 with the assistance of the Trust for Public Land and funded with a grant from the Florida Communities Trust. This park is the first parcel noted in the Land Acquisition Committee’s Ponce Preserve Conservation project that the Town successfully acquired.
Four natural communities can be found in this park: shell mound, maritime hammock, salt marsh and mangrove swamp. A variety of native plants thrive here including coontie, palmettos, leather ferns, beauty berry, goldenrod, cedars, oaks and mangroves.
An archaeological survey completed in 2007 showed that the Indian midden extends the length of the property close to Peninsula Drive. A small parking area, a picnic table and informational signs were completed in the September 2008. Future improvements planned include nature trails with additional educational signage, a playground and bocce court, a wildlife viewing tower and boardwalk with canoe launch that will access Daggett Creek.
